Art, Illness & The Journey Forward
Art has always been a way for me to navigate life - translating emotions, experiences, and personal history into something tangible.Â
In 2023, my practice was profoundly altered by something I never expected: a sudden and life-threatening illness. What followed was not only a fight for survival but a transformation in how I see time, resilience, and the body itself as a canvas of lived experience.
This journey has inevitably woven itself into my art, shaping how and why I create. I have decided to share regular updates here - not just as a record of personal struggle, but as an exploration of the ways illness, endurance, and artistic expression intertwine. Several new projects are also developing (Project 52, New Life).
Sharing a Part of Our Journey
In late August 2023, I developed jaundice. What initially seemed like a minor concern soon led to a life-altering discovery - a tumour that required immediate intervention. In September, I underwent the Whipple procedure at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I was 43 years old.
The medical team saved my life - not just once. Words will never be enough to express my gratitude to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff who carried me through every complication and uncertainty.
What was meant to be a two-week hospital stay turned into nearly seven weeks of recovery, marked by setbacks and resilience. More than a year was needed for a full recovery from the surgery, and by now it's obvious, I will never be the same. By December, I began chemotherapy, but after three months, I had to stop due to severe side effects that pushed my body beyond its limits. The treatment also activated other serious medical conditions, adding to the complexity of my recovery. I eventually finished chemotherapy in June 2024.
Then, in November 2024, a routine scan revealed something unexpected. By January 2025, further tests confirmed a new challenge ahead. At this point, another surgery is not an option, and my path forward is once again uncertain as I await further medical guidance.

Yet this journey is not mine alone.
Just as I returned home from the hospital, we were confronted with another devastating reality - Erika, my wife, also received a serious diagnosis. Within weeks, she underwent two major surgeries. In less than six months, between the two of us, we faced three operations and an overwhelming test of strength.
Despite it all, we continue.
As an artist, I have always believed in the power of storytelling - not just through words, but through the language of images, performance, and material. This experience has reshaped my understanding of time, resilience, and the fragility of existence.
While I wear my 52 cm scar with pride as a marker of my journey, I know that sharing such an image might be too shocking for some. But it remains a part of me - etched into my body as a permanent reminder of everything I have endured and everything I continue to fight for.
We move forward, creating, reflecting, and holding space for everything that comes next.

Thank you to all those who have been here for us.Â
